Mathieu Da Costa Awards

Mathieu Da Costa was a man who facilitated trade and cultural understanding between the French and Mi'kmaq cultures in the early 1700's.
The Mathieu Da Costa Awards established in his honour have a deadline date of December 23, 1999 . Students are asked to submit an essay or short story in English or French or artwork which celebrates the contributions of people from diverse cultures. Students are encouraged to provide information on people whose work is little known or celebrated in Canada's history. Winners will attend the awards ceremony, accompanied by a parent or guardian, at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Ottawa in February, 2000, receiving prizes and certificates of achievement. Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation

If you are a youth needing help, dont be afraid to call the Kids Help Phone at the following toll-free number: 1-800-668-6868. OSSTF has a bursary to assist children of OSSTF members financially with post-secondary programs. There are five one-thousand dollar bursaries offered each year. Application deadline is April 26, 2000. Application forms are available through the Guidance Department at public secondary schools.


Heritage Fair 2000 at Markham Village

This York Region Board of Education led initiaitve provides insights to Heritage Fair 2000 which will take place at Markham Historic Village on Thursday, May 11, 2999. This celebration of Canada's Unique culture and heritage spans grades three to ten, incorporating projects for the areas of drama, dance, visual arts, music, geography, history, literature and dance. Kids Who Care, Markham will be there with a booth depicting the accomplishments of our organization to date.

Fellowships for Studying in French

Fellowships for Studying in French and French Summar Language Bursaries are made available each year to encourage Ontario residents to enter a full-time postsecondary education program offered in French at a French-language or bilingual institution. The program receives funding support from the Department of the Secretary of State of Canada and is administered in Ontario by the Ministry of Colleges and Universities. Application forms should be requested by December, by calling the following toll-free number 1-800-465-3957. They are mailed out a short time into the new year. Deadline dates are generally after or around March 1. The application from accompanied by properly completed supporting documentation must be submitted to:

As an alternative, you may also wish to ask about the Provincial Second Language Monitor Program which is a cross-Canada initiative. Recipients of these awards may receive other awards, bursaries, scholarships, and assistance (excluding assistance based on financial need) to a value of $3,000 per academic year. It is possible for secondary students in their final year of secondary school to apply. Courses can be taken for university credit. Candidates are selected on the basis of academic performance over approximately the last three years of study. There are similar programs in Quebec for studying English.

Harmony Movement.


Visit Harmony Movement who granted long-time KWC member, Herman Wong , now studying at the University of Waterloo, with the 1999 Harmony Movement award for his community outreach leadership. Harmony Movement is dedicated to fostering mutual respect among all people and promoting diversity in Canada.
