Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach
aka Reb Shlomo
born in Berlin, 1925, 18 Tevet 5685, or: Jan. 14, 1925
to Naftali & Pesya
twin brother & a sister (or maybe more)
The family, which fled the Nazis in 1933,
lived in Switzerland before coming to New York in 1939,
His father became the rabbi of a small synagogue on
West 79th Street, Congregation Kehlilath Jacob
Congregation Kehilath Jacob, 305 West 79th Street, in Manhattan NY.

He started studying in Torah VaDa'at Yeshivah, in Brooklyn, NY
but then mainly at the Beit-Midrash-Gavo'a (Yeshiva) in Lakewood, south N.J., From 1951 to 1954.
One of the only 2 to recieve their 'Smicha' directly from the head rabbi, Rabbi Kotler

Shlomo Carlebach and his twin brother, Eli Chaim,
took over the synagogue after their father's death in 1967.
and the sister, Shulamith Levovitz is in Monsey, N.Y

Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, the foremost songwriter in contemporary Judaism,
who used his music to inspire and unite Jews around the world
started to compose, probably there in Lakewood Yeshiva, at the late 1950's
a total 35 years of:
-composing lots of songs,
(lyrics were mostly from the Jewish scripts)
(and very few English songs too)
-and singing,
-and playing his guitar,
-and tellings the greatest stories,
-and performing all over the world !!!!

Rabbi Carlebach put the words of Jewish prayer and ceremony to music that is heard
at virtually every Jewish wedding and bar-mitzvah, from Hasidic to Reform.

founded the Moshav (village) "Modi'in" (or "Meor Modi'in" ("Meor" or "Or...") ),
(east of the Lod Airport, Israel's int'l airport, in Israel.)

composed 4000-5000 songs, of which a 1,000 well known ones,
with over 25 albums....

married late , with Neila (from Toronto),
then 2 daughters: Neshama & Nedara (both married july-aug, 2003)
(but him & wife, separated before his passing...)

his first 2 shuls/minyans:

b) in the "Moshav Modi'in" (or "Meor Modi'in" ), near/not too far from the Israeli int'l airport.

his passing:
passed away by heart-attack, on the airplane, at age 69, Oct/1994
on Friday, 16 Cheshvan, 5755, (or: 21 October, 1994 )
just before Shabbat, parashat Vayera (to start 5:49pm, in NY)
in his last days he was in London,
then Fri. morning, flew in from Manchester UK, to Toronto, via NY,
upon arrival in NY, went home to get a few items, then back to the airport,
to continue early afternoon on his final flight's segment, to Toronto,
on the plane, a surprise, he met & sat next to the Squar'e rebbe (the Admo"r)
(not sure of spelling in Eng) of Boro-Park NY,
the 2 spoke already prior to take off, then the Rebbe asked Reb Shlomo,
to get his guitar and sing some niggun,
that was the LAST niggun (song/chant) he ever played, "Chasdei HaShem ki lo tamnu",
which is why this song is on the
grave's stone,
but alas, as the plane started taking off, in the air, (from NY), he got a severe heart attack,
and returned his holy soul to his creator.
the plane returned to NY, he had a starting funeral from his shul in NY, on Sun. morning,
but was brought for final resting to Yerushalayim Israel, in Har Hamenuchot.

after his sad passing, lots of Carlebach-style minyans (services) started to florish,
amongs the first ones:
a) The Happy Minyan of EFRAT, The first Shlomo minyan ever.
Founded by Reb Dovid'l Zeller in 5754. (1993-4)
