Embers

Fan the flame and watch it rise as embers start to glow
Looking ever deeper then into the flame to know
While you search for meaning there obscurity prevails
Like on the sea with swirling winds fighting with the sail
Careful now you look close, afraid you’ll singe your flesh
Emerging patterns seem to build with the heat upon your face
A sizzle here, another there, as drops begin to fall
On the emerging pattern – understanding now will stall
Seeking shelter from the rain, there’s no chance tonight
It was not in the “great design” yet another time you might
Embers cool and fade away a memory in your eye
With the drumbeats of the rain just teardrops as you cry
