For any minor pro hockey player or anyone else who makes calls from the road, I found the BEST rates on long distance calls. This company, ATN, uses a subsidiary of MCI Worldcom to place your calls, so the clarity is topnotch. I saved so much cash by using the card and the FREE 800 number when calling home, I decided to become a company representative I figured anyone who uses a calling card all the time would easily see the advantages of these rates.
The 800 number is the awesome. It is FREE to sign up for, and there is no monthly fees. If you don't use it, you won't pay a penny! If you do use it, it's only 9.9 cents/min vs. 25 for an AT&T number. You tell them what number you want the toll free number to ring to, and they will give you a 888 number that rings to that phone. They'll even try to use the same number and just switch the area code if it's available. You can have up to 5 800 numbers on a single account, covering the places you call the most, all FREE! This one is a no-brainer to sign up for. It's great for college students calling home on Mom and Dad's dime, and it is much cheaper than calling collect.
The best thing about this card is its low rate of only 14.9 cents/min, I seriously doubt you can find that rate anywhere else. Unlike a prepaid card, it is always there for you, ready to use for as long as you want. Also, there is no more connection fees like AT&T and MCI charge. There is a small payphone fee of 30 cents a call if you use one, but you have to pay that with any card. With other companies you have to pay the payphone fee, plus their connection fee that's usually over a dollar per call. What happens if you get an answering machine? There goes your buck, and you didn't even talk to anyone. That sucks, and it adds up on your bill too, believe me.
The great thing about using these services is you don't have to change anything with your regular home service if you don't want to. You can have ATN as your home long distance carrier if you would like, and they give you the great rate of 9.9 cents/min for all your long distance calls, and even better for in-state calls. And that is with no monthly service charge you pay with other companies. You get a single monthly bill with all your calls made with their services on it, and you can even set it up to have your balanced payed by a credit card.
Lastly, the huge advantage over other plans is the way ATN bills your calls. Each service bills you in 6 second increments. For example, use the 888 number for six seconds when you get an answering machine, it costs you a whopping 1cent. You can't beat that.
