Road Rallying/12 Car Rallies

All manner of events are run under the umbrella title of ‘rallies’. However the most popular are simply known as road rallies. The essence of this type of event is to maintain a time schedule through a series of control points by following route instructions which often put a great emphasis on navigation. These events take place on normal public roads, almost always at night. All competing cars must be properly taxed, tested and insured. A variation on the road rally is the 12 car rally, the most common form of this event.

Autotests

This is one of the cheapest and most enjoyable forms of motorsport, where you can use a perfectly standard road car, but where driving ability is vital. Cars compete against the clock. The driver must negotiate a set route between, through and around various obstacles, normally plastic pylons or cones. Usually, some parts of the course will be tackled in reverse. The surface is normally smooth, often tarmac. The entry is divided into classes, according to each car’s size and technical specification (front and rear wheel drive, for example). An annual British Autotest Championship is held which includes our Championship Round.

Minimum Requirements: Any roadworthy car, you must be at least 17 years old to drive.

Rallying

The most popular form of motorsport in Britain, perhaps because it involves ordinary looking cars. It involves two people working together - a driver and a co-driver or navigator - and the cars normally run at one minute intervals, competing against the clock rather than each other.

While very specialised cars are required for top level special stage rallying, unmodified, everyday cars can be used for simple road events, making this the most popular form of rallying. Check the Road Rallying/12 Car Rally section for more details.

Table Tops

Rallying without the car!. These fun events are part of the training for real rallies offered by the club. Usually on club nights or as part of a multi-event competition, table top rallies act as good practice in the navigational problems encountered during rallying, and involve transferring a set of navigational instructions onto a map against the clock much the same as on a 12 car. This gives all the headaches of competing without been thrown around a car!
