1998 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductions

On January 12, 1998, four bands and four individuals were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at a ceremony at New York City's Waldorf Astoria Hotel. The individuals inducted were Jelly Roll Morton, Gene Vincent, Lloyd Price and Allen Toussaint. The bands inducted were Santana and three of my all time favorites, The Mamas and The Papas, The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac. Santana performed their hit "Black Magic Woman" and was accompanied on guitar by Peter Green. Peter Green was an original member of Fleetwood Mac and wrote "Black Magic Woman" for Fleetwood Mac and Santana covered the song in 1970 and scored a hit. Eight members of Fleetwood Mac inducted including founding members Mick Fleetwood, John McVie and Peter Green, former guitarists Danny Kirwan and Jeremy Spencer, keyboardist Christine McVie, guitarist Lindsey Buckingham and singer Stevie Nicks. The most famous band lineup (Fleetwood, both McVies, Buckingham and Nicks) performed "Landslide", "Big Love" and "Say You Love Me". The original members of the Mamas and the Papas: Michelle Phillips, John Phillips and Denny Doherty (minus the deceased Cass Elliot) reunited and sung together for the first time in almost 30 years. They sung their hit song "California Dreamin'". All members of the Eagles (including former members Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner) got back together to perform "Take It Easy" and "Hotel California". Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Timothy B. Schmit, Joe Walsh and Don Felder along with Leadon and Meisner closed out the show. Overall, it was a joyous occasion and can occasionally be seen in reruns on VH1.
